After WWII, Hawaii's Okinawan community raised money to send 550 pigs from the US Mainland to their war-ravaged homeland. 7 brave men delivered the pigs to Okinawa on a long and dangerous sea voyage. The pigs were to help restart the decimated pig-farming industry and alleviate a food shortage, creating a lifetime bond. Characters on boat's sail read 'Pigs from the Sea', and 'Okinawa', and look for the green bittermelon emblem reading 'shimanchu' or 'islander' at the bottom of our Okinawan themed designs!
